Tax Deductibles for Nurses In The UK

If you are a nurse or work in the healthcare sector in the UK, whether on a permanent basis or whilst on a working holiday, you could be entitled to claim tax relief. Thousands of nurses miss out on this every year because they don’t realise that they are entitled to claim, so read on to find out what you could claim for as a health professional.

Uniforms

Many employers will provide you with a uniform so you don’t have to cover the cost of buying this yourself, however if you do need to purchase any essential clothing items, then you can claim the cost of this back through your tax rebate. Even if a uniform is provided, then this may not include items such as tights or non-slip nursing shoes – if you have bought these items of clothing yourself then make sure you add this to your claim.

If you are responsible for laundering or dry cleaning your nurses uniform, then you can also claim for this too.

Membership and Training

You are eligible to claim for the costs of any training courses or conferences, providing they are relevant to your current role as a nurse, such as first aid, health & safety etc. Your claim can include any course fees, books, stationery etc as well as any travelling costs incurred.

If you are required to pay subscription fees as part of your nursing role, such as to the RCN or NMC, or even if you are part of a Trade Union like UNISON, then you can also claim for these through your tax relief. If you are unsure whether your membership can be included in this, you can get a full list of approved providers from the HRMC website
